Event Comment: The Duke's Company. It is not certain that this play was revived at this time, but Tom Essence, which was probably acted toward the end of August or in early September (it was licensed 4 Nov. 1676) contains a scene in "Malfey's Chamber," suggesting that a revival of The Duchess of Malfi had occurred not long before the production of Tom Essence. On the other hand, it should be noted that the cast in the edition of 1678 contains names which point to a much earlier production; for example, Cademan probably acted little after his injury in the summer of 1673 and Downes (Roscius Anglicanus, p. 35) states that Cogan and Price died ca. 1673-74

Event Comment: MMrs Tame (see 15 April hay) had announced for her benefit this night The Old Batchelor, with Cibber as Fondlewife, Giffard as the Old Batchelor, and Mrs Giffard as Laetitia, to be followed by Tom Thumb, with Mrs Tame playing Tom Thumb, but a notice of 11 April states that Mrs Tame was ill and the performance had to be deferr'd

Event Comment: [Herrington, who was from the Royalty, and Mrs Farmer are both identified in Public Advertiser, 30 Aug. As afterpiece the playbill announces Peeping Tom, but "The fatigues Edwin had undergone at his benefit the preceding evening rendered him incapable of performing last night. Peeping Tom was therefore obliged to be changed to The Golden Pippin" (Public Advertiser, 30 Aug.)

Event Comment: "Notoriety and Tom Thumb were to have been performed by command of Their Majesties; but, in consequence of the news from France [the execution of Louis XVI on 21 Jan.], at five o'clock a letter was received from the Vice-Chamberlain, stating that Their Majesties could not honour the theatre with their presence, and the farce was changed from Tom Thumb to the new Pantomime" (Morning Chronicle, 24 Jan.). Event Comment: The King's Company. Pepys, Diary: Tom and I and my wife to the Theatre, and there saw The Silent Woman. The first time that ever I did see it, and it is an excellent play. Among other things here, Kinaston, the boy, had the good turn to appear in three shapes: first, as a poor woman in ordinary clothes, to please Morose; then in fine clothes, as a gallant, and in them was clearly the prettiest woman in the whole house, and lastly, as a man; and then likewise did appear the handsomest man in the house

Pepys, Diary, 20 Oct.: Young Killigrew did so commend The Villaine, a new play made by Tom Porter, and acted only on Saturday at the Duke's house, as if there never had been any such play come upon the stage. The same yesterday was told me by Captain Ferrers; and this morning afterwards by Dr Clerke, who saw it. Downes, p. 23: Written by Major Thomas Porter; this Play by its being well perform'd, had Success extremly beyond the Company's Expectation....It Succeeded 10 Days with a full House, to the last. [Downes especially praises Price. The edition of 1663 has a Prologue but no actors' names and no epilogue.

Pepys, Diary: Thence to the King's play-house, and there saw Bartholomew Fayre, which do still please me; and is, as it is acted, the best comedy in the world, I believe. I chanced to sit by Tom Killigrew, who tells me that he is setting up a Nursery; that is, is going to build a house in Moorefields, wherein he will have common plays acted. But four operas it shall have in the year, to act six weeks at a time; where we shall have the best scenes and machines, the best musique, and every thing as magnificent as is in Christendome; and to that end hath sent for voices and painters and other persons from Italy
