Event Comment: Lover's Vows. In Consequence of the Approbation which the above Play has received from the Town, various Translations, or pretended Translations of the work from which it was taken, have been offered for publication to some eminent Booksellers, who honourably declining such purchase, have given Information to the Manager of the attempted Imposition. The Public are therefore respectfully acquainted that the Play, as now performing at this Theatre, was rewritten from a literal Translation, sold to the Proprietor by an Agent of the German Author, and has been adapted to the English Stage by considerable Alterations in Plot & Incidents. The Piece will not be published till the 20th Night of its representation, when it will be submitted to the Reader, with the Name of Mrs Inchbald prefixed to the Publication. Receipts: #432 18s. 6d. Event Comment: ["The Play to-night was to have been The Confederacy, by Desire of the Duchess of Leinster, with The Spoiled Child (both advertised on playbill of 7 May), for Mrs Jordan's benefit...but she suspecting the House would be thin, pretended to be ill, would not act" (Kemble Mem.). "Love for Love (announced in playbill of this present night) and The Spoiled Child were deferred on account of the indisposition of Mrs Jordan, and The West Indian and The Island of St. Marguerite substituted...Aickin and Packer...could not be met with, and no other means of presenting The West Indian remained than Messrs Williames and Maddocks being permitted to read the parts of Stockwell and Capt. Dudley. This the audience refused to comply with, and insisted on having their money returned, which was at last done. The pit was cleared, not even one person remaining; but during the second act, four people came in...About thirty stayed in the boxes, and not a sufficient number to fill the front rows in the galleries...The West Indian, with two parts in it read, and a house thus uncomfortably thin, dragged dismally through the three first acts. Event Comment: A great Noise when they appear'd occasion'd, I believe, by a Paragraph in the Papers, saying, a piece of Machinery, of Fountain will soon come out at Covent Garden--so it was concluded we had stole ye design from Mr Rich--but not true, for they were design'd & made by Mr Johnson Property maker to our House--during ye Storm one Mr Bramstone, being Drunk ran cross the stage twice--fell down, & was taken off, like a dead Hero.--however the Pantomine ended quiet (Cross).
