Event Comment: By the unfortunate death of her Royal Highness the Princess Dowager of Wales a temporary stop was put to theatrical entertainments to this day. Opera will be performed at this theatre three times or at least twice every week till Passion Week. Such of the Nobility and Gentry, subscribers to the Opera who do not care to keep their Boxes on the Thursday, and have the extra weekly performance reckoned into their Subscription nights are desired to send word

Event Comment: A Serious Opera. Music by Several eminent composers, executed under the direction of Giordani. The opera was not performed because of Millico's illness. He was suddenly taken ill with a cold and hoarseness (Public Advertiser, 22 April). [Le Pazzie D'Orlando was substituted.

Event Comment: [Pasticcio: an opera, cantata, or other composition made up of various pieces from different authors or sources. See H. Walpole to Mann, 1 Nov. 1752, Our Operas begin tomorrow with a pasticcio full of most of my favourite songs." Grove's Dictionary, II, 688: "A species of lyric drama composed of airs, duets and other movements selected from different sources and so grouped as to provide a mixed audience with the greatest possible number of favourite airs in succession." The Westminster Magazine remarked of Oratorio season at cg: "They have not possessed so uninterrupted a flow of success, but we remember that they have experienced more barren seasons. The instrumental band is superior to that at the other house, and the vocal not at all inferior. At this house they have produced selections of musical pieces, by the most capital masters, arranged so as to form entire entertainments. In general these are very agreeable." Her identity appears from playbill of 13 Oct. where her name occurs in character of Rosetta along with the statement that it is her fourth appearance on any stage. She appears on the weekly payroll from the first week at 16s. 6d. per day (Account Book). Event Comment: Mainpiece: A New Comic Opera [by R. B. Sheridan] never perform'd. The Music partly New and partly selected from the most eminent composers. With a New Overture, Scenes, Dresses, and Other Decorations. Books of the songs in the Opera to be had at the Theatre. [This note repeated on subsequent bills.] Afterpiece: Not acted these 10 years. [See 19 May 1767.] [Reviewed in the Westminster Magazine for Nov. which commented on the witty dialogue and effectiveness of the music. It was "puffed" gently in the Public Advertiser 22 Nov.: "Receiv'd with every mark of approbation that could be given. It will be repeated tomorrow evening with the Farce of the Apprentice."

Event Comment: In order to give Time to the Serious Singers to get ready in Trajetta's New Opera [Germondo (see 21 Jan. 1777)], La Fraschetana will be performed on Saturday, on which Account there will be no Opera To-morrow

Event Comment: Public Advertiser, 22 Mar.: At the particular Desire of the Nobility and Gentry, the Subscribers to this Theatre, on account of the young Prince's Christening there will be no Opera to-morrow. This delay will prove very convenient for compleating the great Preparations which in every respect are necessary to present [the new] Opera [see 25 Mar.] in all the Magnificence it requires. [Prince Octavius, 8th son of George III, was christened on 23 Mar.

"In the year 1781, Pacchierotti had been heard so frequently, that his singing was no impediment to conversation, or even to animated narrative and debate; but while the elder Vestris was on the stage, if during a pas seul, any of his admirers forgot themselves so much as to applaud him with their hands, there was an instant check put to his rapture by a choral hu-sh! For those lovers of music who talked the loudest when Pacchierotti was singing a pathetic air, or making an exquisite close, were now thrown into agonies of displeasure, lest the graceful movements du dieu de la dance, or the attention of his votaries, should be disturbed by audible approbation" (Burney, II, 893)
