Event Comment: In the last Scene of the Pantomime from the Galleries some hissing; some Crying off! &c. till Mr King adress'd the Audience as follows: Ladies & Gentlemen. If this Token of your disapprobation Proceeds from the Mad Scene being left out, give me leave to Assure you, Many Applications have been made to the Managers to have it omitted upon which they were quiet (Hopkins). In the last scene of the Pantomime from the Gallery a Great noise, and hissing, and crying Off, off-the mad Scene &c. Mr King goes forward, and addressed the audience-'Ladies and Gentlemen, if this token of your disapprobation, proceeds from the Mad scene being left [out]; I do assure you there were many applications made to the managers that it might be omitted, as they thought that unhappiness of human being too melancholy for a diversion (Hopkins Diary-MacMillan). Event Comment: MMr Aickin hissed for being imperfect.--This night was introduced at the end of the Pantomime a Grand Masquerade in imitation of that given by the King of Denmark at the Opera House, and lighted up after the same manner--Every performer belonging to the House was on, even Mr Garrick and his brother.--The dresses were very elegant, and the whole very striking,--and gave pleasure to the Audience (Hopkins Diary). [The masquerade remained a part of Queen Mab and was also attached to Fortunatus. It evoked the following verse in Lloyd's Evening Post, Nov. 21-23]: One night last week a merry blade,@Who'd seen the Royal Masquerade,@And paid ten guineas for admission,@Began to damn the imposition;@His friend reply'd, "You may complain,@For I last Night at Drury Lane,@Saw full as much for eighteen pence,@As you got at such vast expence."-- G.S. Event Comment: The Rose is a New Musical performance of Two Acts by Dr Arne a very dull insipid piece. Mr G. protested against its being perform'd its being perform'd it was hiss'd from the beginning & wd not Suffer it to be given out again, therefore Mr King went on & told them it Should not be perform'd again until it be alter'd (Hopkins Diary).
