Event Comment: LLondon Daily Post and General Advertiser, 15 Sept.: [cg] is new painted and decorated, and will be open'd on Friday next...the Report of Mr Cibber and Mrs Horton being engag'd to another Theatre, is entirely without Foundation: That Company would have begun acting sooner, but for the finishing of a large additional Building, which is now cover'd in, whereby they will, on some Occasions, be enabled to add near 70 Feet to the Length of the Stage, which was before the longest in England, but will now exceed in Depth, any Theatre in Europe

Event Comment: In a short time will be perform'd at the Theatre in the Hay-Market, a Concert of Music; and the Tragedy of Othello, Moor of Venice. The character of Othello will be new dress'd agreeable to the Manner and Custom of his own Country. As both these entertainments will be perform'd by a set of Gentlemen for their own Diversion, no Money will be taken, nor any person admitted but by printed Tickets; which (by order of the Gentlemen) will be deliver'd gratis by Mr Machlin, at his House in Bow-Street, Covent Garden; where Ladies, by sending their Servants, may take Places for the Boxes.--Daily Advertiser

Event Comment: The Third Night. 7 p.m. The Company intends to revive several old pieces, and will perform every Tuesday and Friday during the summer season. Places for the Boxes at Mr Macklin's, Bow Street, Covent Garden. [A letter appeared in Daily Advertiser, 10 July, on the acting of Hamlet.

Event Comment: The New Theatre in the Haymarket will speedily be open'd with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, by Permission, according to Act of Parliament. This Piece, it's said, has not been played these hundred years. The character of Juliet is to be acted by Miss Jenny Cibber, a young daughter of Mr Cibber, by his first wife....A new Comedy, call'd the Prodigal; or, Recruits for the Queen of Hungary, will soon after be brought on that Stage.-Daily Advertiser

Event Comment: At common prices. At the particular Desire of several Persons of Distinction who attend the Instalment of the Knights of the Bath, this Play is not to begin till exactly at half an hour after six, at which time the Curtain will be drawn up

Event Comment: Having for a Series of Years received the greatest Obligations from the Nobility and Gentry of this Nation, I have always retained a deep Impression of their Goodness. As I perceived, that joining good Sense and Significant Words of Musick, was the best Method of recommending this to an English Audience; I have directed my Studies that way, and endeavour'd to shew, that the English Language, which is so expressive of the sublimest Sentiments, is the best adapted of any to the full and solemn Kind of Musick. I have the Mortification now to find, that my Labours to please are become ineffectual, when my Expences are considerably greater. To what Cause I must impute the Loss of the Publick Favour, I am ignorant, but the Loss itself I shall always lament. In the mean time, I am assur'd that a Nation, whose Characteristic is good Nature, would be affected with the Ruin of any Man, which was owing to his Endeavours to entertain them. I am likewise persuaded, that I shall have the forgiveness of those noble Persons, who have honour'd me with their Patronage, and their Subscription this Winter, if I beg them Permission to stop short, before my Losses are too great to support, if I proceed no farther in my Undertaking; and if I intreat them to withdraw three Fourths of their Subscription, one Fourth part only of my Proposal having been perform'd. Attendance will be given at Mr Handel's House in Brook's St., Hanover Square, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next, in order to pay back the Subscription money. [Two poems in honor of Handel in the 21 Jan. issue of the Daily Advertiser. A letter in the 25 Jan. issue indicates that the subscribers would not accept the proferred refund; Handel announced he would resume performances in view of this response.

Event Comment: Benefit Mrs Charke. 6 p.m. 5s., 3s., 2s., will be presented a Concert, etc. [In the bill for 21 Feb. it is announced as: By Permission...will be reviv'd an Historical Play, not acted these sixty years.] Tickets and Places to be had of Mr Meredith, at the Theatre. [Puffs in the Daily Advertiser announce their pleasure that Mrs Charke is actually going to play a woman's role. A rehearsal was held on 1 March.

Event Comment: Benefit of the Author, it being the eighth night only of acting, but the night from the first Representation, because of the interruption of Mrs Woffington's Benefit. Tickets to be had of G. Strahan, in Cornhill; J. Davidson in the Poultry; A. Millar in the Strand; R. Dodsley in Pall Mall, and of Mr Hobson at the Theatre, where places may be taken on the stage.-Daily Advertiser

Event Comment: Died, after a lingering illness, Mr Robert Turbutt, belonging to the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, and Master of the Swan Tavern in Smithfield, a facetious and agreeable companion, greatly and justly esteem'd by all that knew him for his Sincerity where he profess'd a friendship.--General Advertiser, 27 Feb

Mr Bayes: By the unanimous Desire of a number of your Friends here assenbled, who intend to sit in judgment upon you on Friday, I take upon me to advise you in some Particulars, as to your present Undertaking. Let not any Success you might meet with at one End of the Town where the Audience must be composed of a different Class of People from what you may expect at Covent Garden, tempt you to think of mimicking an Actress whom the Town doats upon; and particularly avoid Puffing; a Scheme long ago worn threadbare, but lately quite demolish'd by an enterprizing Genius. Not even an Epilogue from the Gods would be of any Service now; and therefore if you have anything that's new, any fiery Flights of Fancy, and all that, let them lie dormant till the Time of Action, and then endeavour to elevate and surprize. Event Comment: MMrs Cibber Play'd (Cross). The Letter sign'd E. L. written in the Name of several Persons of Distinction, is receiv'd; and the Play of King Lear will be acted there, as soon as Mr Garrick is able to perform so long a Character (note "From the Theatre Royal Drury Lane" inserted in the General Advertiser). Event Comment: On Thursday next Hamlet, the part of Hamlet by Barry. And on Saturday the Foundling. N.B.: All Places taken by Ladies and Gentlemen for the Foundling this night [Tuesday] will be continued for Saturday, unless notice is given to the contrary (General Advertiser). This play was for the benefit of Mr Garrick, clear of all charges; and therefore I shall at the end of the account subtract this sum from the total amount, it being return'd him again. And the reason of entering it among the rest of the sums was, because the principle [sic] treasurer should know nothing of the matter; and therefore as it stands in their books in the same manner as above, I think it proper to set it down here (Powel).
