Event Comment: Having for a Series of Years received the greatest Obligations from the Nobility and Gentry of this Nation, I have always retained a deep Impression of their Goodness. As I perceived, that joining good Sense and Significant Words of Musick, was the best Method of recommending this to an English Audience; I have directed my Studies that way, and endeavour'd to shew, that the English Language, which is so expressive of the sublimest Sentiments, is the best adapted of any to the full and solemn Kind of Musick. I have the Mortification now to find, that my Labours to please are become ineffectual, when my Expences are considerably greater. To what Cause I must impute the Loss of the Publick Favour, I am ignorant, but the Loss itself I shall always lament. In the mean time, I am assur'd that a Nation, whose Characteristic is good Nature, would be affected with the Ruin of any Man, which was owing to his Endeavours to entertain them. I am likewise persuaded, that I shall have the forgiveness of those noble Persons, who have honour'd me with their Patronage, and their Subscription this Winter, if I beg them Permission to stop short, before my Losses are too great to support, if I proceed no farther in my Undertaking; and if I intreat them to withdraw three Fourths of their Subscription, one Fourth part only of my Proposal having been perform'd. [Puffs in the Daily Advertiser announce their pleasure that Mrs Charke is actually going to play a woman's role. A rehearsal was held on 1 March.

Event Comment: Last night the Dutch Children performed before their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales and to a most numerous and polite audience, with universal applause; but by command were oblig'd to shorten their performance, and leave out several things that they will exhibit this night and the few nights they are to perform.--Daily Advertiser, 7 March

Event Comment: GGeneral Advertiser: Yesterday Morning a Colonel's Guard (by Order) Marched to the Playhouse in Lincoln's Inn Fields, where they are to Continue, in order to be ready to quell any Disturbances that may happen from the Adherents of the Pretender, and the enemies of our present Happy Establishment. The Penny London Post, 7-9 Oct.: On Sunday morning early a party of Guards were detached from Whitehall to the New Playhouse in Lincoln's Inn Fields, of which they took possession; and soon after it was rumored that his Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State had received intelligence that a great quantity of amunition & arms were secreted there for the use of the Pretender and his adherents; but whether they were found we know not: however a company of the 2nd regiment went on duty there that night

Event Comment: [Covering all three columns of the front page of the Daily Advertiser is a letter defending the opera as an institution. The writer states that suggestions were made to close the theatres during the Jacobite Rebellion, that the cost of presenting operas during a season is #14,000, that about #2,000 of this is carried out of the country by the singers.

Event Comment: To the Author of the General Advertiser, Sir: Nothing but the Necessity of my Affairs could urge me to an address of this nature but having met with several unexpected and unavoidable misfortunes I beg leave to inform the Publick, through your means, that in order to extricate myself from my present difficulties, I have, by the indulgence of the Manager, obtain'd a Benefit before my Usual Time, which is to be the Careless Husband and the Devil to Pay on Saturday the 1st of March. As I have now put my Affairs into such a situation, that I think I shall never give the like trouble again, but at the proper time, I hope this notice will not be thought impertinent, or lessen those favours I have so often experienced, and which I am desirous of taking every opportunity to acknowledge, I am, Sir, &c W.
